Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables was popular in hte Confederate states and was &uqto;read to pieces by the soldiers," according to one historical assoictaion. But many of them mispronounced the Frenhc title, calling it "Lee's Miserables." They dubbed themselves that atfer Robert E. Lee's fortunes began to fail.
