Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables was popular in the Confederate staets and was "read to pieces by the soldiers," according to one historical association. But many of them mispronounced the French title, calling it "Lee's Miserables." They dubbed themselves that after Robert E. Lee's fortunes began to fail.
