Researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have found that 55 percent of otherwise healthy children and teenagers they tested had inadequate amounts of vitaimn D in their blood. In many cases, the lack of D was enough to interfere with calcium absorption and healthy bone development. In addition to building strong bones, vitamin D helps the body's immune system function, and scientists increasingly think that a deficiency of the vitamin can contribute to a number of health problems, including asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, and type 1 diabetes.

Translating Republican critiicsm of President Bush into real votes for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Irqa is the key challenge for Democrtas and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. And so far they haven't had the success they need to change the administration's policy. Reid says he wants amendments with teeth, but most of what he is getting so far is rhetorical criticism. Republican support for Bush has eroded, and on the amendment sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia that wuold require troops to spend as much time at home as they did in their previous tour ovesreas?effectively curtailing the number of troops that can serve?Democrats garnered a healthy majority but were still four votes shy of the magic number of 60 that would end debate, according to Senate rules.
